What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Complete Decongestive Therapy (or Lymphedema Therapy) is an effort of combined modalities to safely and effectively treat Lymphedema. This kind of therapy can be extremely helpful for those suffering with Secondary Lymphedema from cancer treatments (such as after breast cancer), Primary lymphedemas and Lipidema.
Lymphedema is a progressive condition characterized by swelling of affected limb(s), feeling of "heaviness" in limbs, higher risk of infections (ex. cellulitis), and without treatment degenerative changes to the skin and tissues affected.
Complete Decongestive therapy is a combination of manual lymphatic drainage, compression (bandages, garments), exercise, patient education and skin care.
Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle technique to stimulate the lymphatic system, increasing lymphatic flow. This is very helpful to reduce swelling, stimulate removal of waste from the tissues, clear out congestion from immune responses (like the stuffiness felt after having a cold), calm the nervous system and encourage better immunity.
Who Can Benefit from MLD?
MLD is a powerful therapeutic tool for a wide range of conditions and wellness goals. It is particularly beneficial for:
-
Post-Surgical Recovery: Significantly reduces healing time and swelling after procedures like liposuction, tummy tucks, facelifts, and other cosmetic surgeries.
-
Lymphedema Management: Essential for managing primary and secondary lymphedema (swelling due to lymph node removal, often after cancer treatment).
-
Detoxification & Wellness: Boosts the immune system, reduces water retention, and helps the body process metabolic waste.
-
Chronic Inflammation & Autoimmune Conditions: Helps reduce inflammation associated with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
-
Digestive Issues: Can relieve constipation and bloating by stimulating related lymphatic clusters.
-
Sinus & Respiratory Relief: Clears sinus congestion and relieves allergies by draining fluid from the face and neck.
-
Skin Health: Promotes a clearer complexion and can help with acne by improving circulation and waste removal.

The Klose method, or the Modified Vodder Method: The Gold Standard in MLD
This method involves:
-
Gentle, Rhythmic Movements: Using a very light pressure (equivalent to the weight of a nickel on the skin) to open lymphatic capillaries.
-
Specific Directional Flow: Guiding lymph fluid in the correct anatomical pathway toward healthy lymph nodes.
-
A Systematic Sequence: Following a precise order to clear central pathways first, ensuring the system is not overwhelmed.

What to Expect During Your MLD Session
-
Comprehensive Health History Review: We begin with a detailed consultation to understand your health goals and ensure MLD is appropriate for you.
-
A Calming, Comfortable Environment: You will lie comfortably on a massage table, draped with sheets. The room is kept at a warm, comfortable temperature.
-
The Gentle Technique: The therapist will use slow, rhythmic, wave-like strokes. You will feel a light, soothing touch—never deep or painful. The focus is on the skin and superficial tissues, not the muscles.
-
Focused Treatment: Depending on your needs, the session may focus on specific areas (like an arm or leg) or be a full-body treatment to support overall systemic health.
-
Hydration is Key: You will be encouraged to drink plenty of water after your session to help flush out the mobilized toxins and fluids.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: How is MLD different from a regular massage?
A: The goal, pressure, and technique are completely different. Traditional massage targets muscle tissue with deeper pressure to relieve tension. MLD uses a feather-light touch on the skin to stimulate the lymphatic system for detoxification and reducing swelling.
Q: Is it painful?
A: No. MLD is exceptionally gentle and non-invasive. In fact, it is often described as deeply relaxing and soothing. If you have significant swelling, the area may be tender, but the technique itself should not cause pain.
Q: I am post-op. When can I start MLD?
A: For cosmetic surgery, MLD can often begin 24-48 hours after surgery, once drains are removed (if applicable). Always follow your surgeon's specific clearance, which we will request before your first session.
Q: How many sessions will I need?
A: This depends entirely on your individual condition.
-
Post-Surgical: 5-10 sessions are often recommended for optimal results.
-
Lymphedema Management: This is typically an ongoing maintenance plan.
-
Wellness/Detox: Many clients benefit from a monthly session for immune support.
Q: Are there any contraindications?
A: Yes. MLD should not be performed if you have an active blood clot (thrombosis), active infection, congestive heart failure, or active cancer without physician consent. We will screen for all contraindications during your consultation.
